Life is too precious to spend it going through the motions

18yrs ago I was just a new mum trying to hold down a full time job, raise a young family, run a house, be a good wife, be all the things and do all the things and it was killing me.

I was fed up of feeling guilty about compromising my family life because of work commitments, and feeling guilty for letting work down if I needed to put my family first.

I wanted to be able to earn an income on my own terms, doing meaningful work, that fitted around my life. I wanted to be able to live my whole life, not just be living for the weekend, or aiming for retirement. But the traditional work-life set up just wasn’t working for me.

 

Freedom has always been one of my highest values

I mean, a successful life to me is all about experiences and being fully expressed right? And I know all too well from painful experience that life can change on a sixpence, so it’s too precious to spend it going through the motions or being bound by the expectation of others.

If I wasn’t going to run myself into the ground, just working to pay the bills, I needed to approach things differently…so I figured (crazy fool, that I am) that I would become self employed. I had no idea what I was going to do, but in an act of half spontaneity and half desperation, I quit my job.

Like most people when they go self employed I created a role that was similar to what I had been doing while employed – I was working in my brilliance, using the internet, my networks and my ability to spot opportunity to help small independent businesses to grow.

Again, like most people, starting out, I offered “done for you” services and consultancy work, which was fine for a bit, but it soon became apparent that I’d inadvertently shifted from HAVING a job to OWNING a job.

I was still trading my time for money

– my active work determined my income.

I’d accidentally limited myself because there just weren’t enough hours in each day to learn or earn more. I was maxed out and making myself ill, but there was no sick pay, and I couldn’t take time off without reducing my income because I WAS my income.

To be able to move from trading my time for money I needed to stop working my ass off and start working my assets.

Now, the ridiculous thing is, I bloody knew this! (Robert Kiyosaki’s) Rich Dad, Poor Dad was one of the first books that I read on my entrepreneurial journey, I knew about the cash flow quadrant. Just goes to show that it’s no good simply knowing something if you don’t put it into practice!

I had all the pieces of the jigsaw, but I hadn’t put them together in the right way. So despite freedom and choice being high up on my agenda for life-work balance, I’d not set my work up to fit the lifestyle that I wanted.
